Hypoxic neuronal injury

Neuronal hypoxic injury is triggered by hemodynamic derangement which leads to decreased O2 delivery to the neurons.

Normal Cerebral Hemodynamic Physiology

  • Cerebral blood flow (CBF)
    • 40-67 ml/100 gms/minute (50-55)
    • CBFGM > CBFWM (3-4X)
  • Cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP)
    • 60-180 mm Hg
  • Cerebral Autoregulation maintains normal blood flow
    • in this range of blood pressure

Etiology of Cerebral Ischemia

Arterial Venous Hypoperfusion
Embolus Thrombosis Intracranial hypertension
Thrombus Stenosis Decreased cardiac output
Vasospasm Shock
Decreased circulating volume
